ZombieMall.com’s Haiti Response Fundraiser

Zombies and Haiti go back a very long time. With our site taking a focus on zombies in general, this tragic event that has taken place in Haiti seems a logical place for us at ZombieMall to turn our eye to. As you know ZombieMall is a site of entertainment, but all kidding aside, our hearts go out to the citizens of Haiti. It is being reported that the death count is in the tens of thousands. With two massive earthquakes hitting the area, many of the survivors now find themselves with no shelter, food, or even clean water.

ZombieMall simply wants to urge it’s patrons to help out in any way they can. Four days after Haiti’s massive earthquake, efforts are under way to bury the dead as thousands of bodies crumpled in the streets of Port-au-Prince lay exposed to the sun or draped in sheets and cardboard.

Throughout the city, people covered their noses from the stench and some resorted to face masks. CNN correspondents in Haiti reported efforts to remove the bodies, including the creation of a mass grave. It’s still unclear how many people have been killed in Tuesday’s earthquake; the prime minister suggested there could be several hundreds of thousands.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper, reporting Friday from a mass grave on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince, described seeing hundreds of bodies mixed with garbage in open pits. Some bodies were bulldozed into the half-filled pits. (more…)

Sheldon S. Higdon has decided that while he is still among the living to cite what his final words will be.  He calls it The Obituary of Sheldon S. Higdon. 

Here’s the rundown directly from Higdon’s site:

“So here I am. I finally have an actual blog site where anyone can leave comments about my thoughts, ideas, suggestions, or rants. Just about no topic is off limits for me to write about here on this site I call, The Obituary.

I’ll write about funny experiences I’ve had or about writing. Talk about films or comics. And have a discourse about politics and social issues.  I may even bring up the dirty stuff that happens at Cons. Do I want to embarrass my friends? Uh, yeah! But it’s out of love and respect. Nothing too harmful. As long as it is professional and courteous and doesn’t create some sort of flame war, then I welcome all of you to join.

I call this The Obituary because these could very well be my last words.

It’s taken about 5 years to get listed, but I am now officially listed on IMDB (that’s Internet Movie Data Base for those of you not in the know).  The movie (actually a short that runs about 12 minutes long) A Bad Day was something I wrote as a short story many years ago, I think in the mid 1980′s.

I found that when I adapted it as a shooting script that a few elements had to be changed, but the majority of the story is there.  Basically I thought, what would happen if a guy woke up and everything in his life that could go wrong, went wrong?  Where would his breaking point be?  What would happen if he hit that breaking point?  And the story was formed.  I recall it took about a week to write it.  It took about three weeks to adapt it over to a screenplay.

A few years ago I hooked up with Director, Paul Marquis, and the rest is as they say.. History.

Dr. Wooly Rhodes, former human turned zombie and professor at Zombie University, was arrested outside his home after it was reported that a neighbor saw someone in the upper-class, predominantly living area pushing against the front door and side window.

“I studied the history of zombies. I know every incident in the history of zombies from voodoo to the most recent breakout in South Georgia,” Dr. Rhodes stated. “I have never been arrested or even shot at.  I am an upstanding part of this community.  I do not understand the actions of the officer that arrested me.  I don’t even keep flesh in the house!  I always eat on campus at ZU or in designated flesh-spots.  I never would have thought I would have been part of zombie profiling.”

The charge against him was dropped, but Dr. Rhodes says he plans to use the attention and turn his intellectual heft and stature to the issue of zombie profiling.  He is wanting to start a documentary next spring at Zombie University going point by point with other zombies who have been victims of zombie profiling.

Here is Dr. Rhodes account of what happened:

After returning from a week in Arkansas researching the degredation of cell-structure in backwoods zombies, Dr. Rhodes found himself locked out of his house, and he began pushing against the front door and side window. The sight of a zombie forcing open a door prompted an emergency call to police.

The officer who arrived found Dr. Rhodes in the house and asked him to step outside.  Dr. Rhodes refused, and the officer followed him in. Dr. Rhodes showed him his ID, which included his address, then demanded that the officer identify himself. The officer did not comply, Dr. Rhodes said. He then followed the officer outside, saying repeatedly, “Is this how you treat zombies in America?”

The police report said that Dr. Rhodes was “exhibiting moans and mouth chomping behaviour” and that the officer, Sgt. Roy Tucker, identified himself. “We stand by whatever the officer said in his report,” said Sgt. Peter DeMarco, a spokesman for the Police Department. He would not comment on Dr. Rhodes’ version of his arrest.

The recent scare of H1N1, also known as the Swine Flu, has many people concerned, not just in terms of health, but also in terms of what the future holds.  Many of the zombie enthusiasts are keeping a close eye on this pandemic for any signs of the Zombie Virus. 

Let’s examine what is going on: 

This flu sprung up almost over night.

The President of the United States has pledged “great vigilance” in confronting this Swine Flu outbreak.

The World Health Organization has raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 5.

As of this writing outbreaks have happened in Mexico, the United States, Canada, Scotland, New Zealand, Spain, Britain, Germany, Austria, and Israel.

Symptoms include fever, cough, body aches, chills, and fatigue, as well as vomiting.

Infected people may exhibit symptoms between 1 and 7 days after contracting the virus. 

It is no surprise that Zombie watchers are keeping a close eye on this one.  Thankfully, there does appear to be hope with the Swine Flu.  The CDC has announced that the use of Oseltamivir or Zanamivir can be used as a treatment and/or preventative measure of infection for the Swine Flu.  No such treatment exists for the Zombie Virus, which is 100% fatal. 

Now, why is this important for the Zombie community?  Simply put, it’s a test run.  It’s an event to keep alert of for when the zombie virus does surface. 

For now we strongly urge you to keep in the know, be aware of what is going on around you, and understand that when the zombie virus does come about, it will more than likely happen exactly like this swine flu, only faster.

For now, let’s be thankful there are no reported cases of the Z1N1 virus.

Okay, so what the hell is a site devoted to zombies and vampires, and things of horror have to do with politics? Well, nothing really. Except that I have a voice to speak about this. Any of you who watched George w. Bush’s speech last night knows what he said. For those that missed it, in essence he stated that “Our entire economy is in danger,” and that “Any rescue plan should also be designed to ensure that taxpayers are protected,” President Bush said. “It should welcome the participation of financial institutions, large and small. It should make certain that failed executives do not receive a windfall from your tax dollars. It should establish a bipartisan board to oversee the plan’s implementation. And it should be enacted as soon as possible.”
He further went on to propose a $700 BILLION dollar bail out to give to companies like Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.

That is.. He wants to spend OUR tax dollars to bail out these mortgage lenders (read glorified banks), so that they can lend their customers more money. How in the hell is that bailing anyone out? It’s just giving them more bullets with which to load their gun! This $700 BILLION dollar bail out is not going to boost the economy, it is not going to save anyone’s home if they cannot afford to pay for it; all it’s going to do is provide some hosh-posh people that work at a glorified bank to continue to have a damn job!

What President Bush FAILED to mention was the real issue at hand. Our economy is in ruins right now because no-one can afford anything. It’s got nothing, NADA, to do with a failed Fannie Mae! Our economy was in the crapper before Freddie Mac went crying to the Federal Reserve for help! Why?
Gas Prices. We cannot afford to do shit because of how high the gas prices are, that in turn makes the price of everything else go up. Gallon of gas is on average $3.79 where I live. A gallon of milk; $3.98. I heard that yesterday there was a “convoy” of truckers that were going to protest the cost of gas by doing a no-drive strike in Washington DC. I never heard anything more about that; but thing about it…

This is the heart of the problem there Mr. President Bush. NOT using our tax dollars to Bail Out mortgage lenders, so their executives can continue to hold a position and continue to make tripple digit incomes. The heart of the problem is the fact that the majority of the working class American wroks hard to earn the pittiful pay they do make; do not get any raises or compensation; yet continue to see prices all around rise. I make work 2 jobs, I make $9.00 an hour, a little more than minimum wage. Yet, despite all the rising costs; despite the rise in cost of the products that my employer has made over the past 6 months, I have not recieved a raise. Noone where I work has.

What’s going to happen when the price of gas per gallon meets or exceeds minimum wage?

No shit our economy is in danger. Actually, it’s not our economy. Our economy is just fine. It’s the raping and pillaging of the hard working class and the abuse and price gouging that we are forced to endure that is the real danger. There is only so much we can take before we snap. We are all race cars in the red, and we, as a whole, are ready to blow.

Focus less of a $700 BILLION bail out, that is only going to allow lenders to lend out more money to a country that cannot afford to pay back their current loans, and instead focus on investing that into increasing the income of the people who work hard to support the country and the businesses that drive the economy!
